On the northern end of the island of Paxos one finds the charming little village of Lakka, tucked away in a scenic bay amid olive grove and lush green countryside. During the summer holiday seasons, many houses in the village are rented out to visitors as holiday homes. If one comes to Paxos from Corfu on a Sunday cruise, one can visit Lakka by joining one of the short bus excursions available from the tour guide on the ferry for a few euros.
Lakka has that sunny, colourful and carefree touch, elements always fascinate me when it comes to scenic Greek seaside villages. In the last few years, I have seen quite a great deal of Greek villages on different Greek islands in different parts of Greece, and I must say Lakka certainly ranks among the Top 10 Most Picturesque Greek seaside villages. The place is not yet tainted by mass tourism, still remains outside the grasp of overt-commercialisation that has become a malaise to infect many Greek holiday islands, and has a very soothing atmosphere for those looking for an out-of-the-world vacation spot from the usual crowded tourist resorts in other parts of the Aegean.
It was early May when I visited Lakka, and the tourist season had not really kick-started yet. Most of the restaurants, shops and cafes in the centre and along the sea are already open for business, but the place still seems very quiet.
To some extent Lakka, with its pastel coloured houses and narrow lanes, reminds me of some of the Dodecanese Islands in southern Aegean. There are a few small hotels and some restaurants in the village, a small harbour where motorboats are available for rent. It is a pity I was there for less than an hour, as it would certainly be lovely to spend a few more hours in this scenic spot, walk around the village and take a swim in one of the secluded coves not so far away from the centre of the village.
